notes on how I try to lead the team at Helmit. still learning this every week.

Mega Vision

people have to see where this is going. for us:

  • become the parental control app worldwide
  • have the best threat detection models in existence and sell them to platforms directly
  • and from there: the personal digital safety layer for everyone

everyone has to realize that they are part of this journey and that they also own a part of it.

make them personally motivated

  • where do you see them in one year
    • maybe with their own team
    • being responsible for x, y
  • we only want the best people working on this problem
    • The problem it is so important that it deserves the best talent working on it. This is HELMIT
  • give them praise

give ownership

  • everyone is a product manager
  • should get the problem, then think of the solution, validate it with customers and iterate on it
  • give them a problem and say that they can solve it better than you and that you have complete trust in them to deliver it
  • one person owns a topic. then nobody else has to spend brainpower on it

set ambitious deadlines

  • if deadlines are not met, discuss why they were not met
  • clear number goals, broken down into numbers you can actually control

everyone can be challenged

  • including me
  • this leads to a call where this is discussed
  • don’t tell people what they did wrong. set clear expectations instead

no ego

  • titles don’t matter that much. I am just me
  • our values: lean building, family first, obsessed with the customer, no ego

have fun time

the office has to be cooler than home → Motivating Employees
