this is the talk I gave at the munich innovation ecosystem meetup.
We have huge problems.
Care and nursing capacity is structurally overstretched. Our pension system is heading into a wall.
We have skilled-labor shortages across industries. Bureaucracy is consuming time and talent.
Disinformation and manipulation scale faster than truth.
And education outcomes are slipping in basic skills.
That sounds pretty bleak, right?
So what do we do?
Each and every one of us has two choices.
Option one: internal resignation
“Times have gotten worse, everything is going downhill.” In Germany we would say: “früher war alles besser.”
A typical action in this state of mind would be to open up LinkedIn and post and complain about how everything is getting worse.
Option two: full ownership
Not blame. Ownership.
Of course you don’t control everything, but you own your slice.
You can say: “if humans built these systems, humans can rebuild them better.”
And if the problem scaled, then the response has to scale too.
Big problems need big solutions!
Technology
And one of the biggest solution levers humanity has ever had is technology.
Technology has repeatedly taken problems that looked unsolvable at scale and made them solvable: clean water systems, vaccines, safer cars, global logistics, instant communication. Not perfect. But transformative.
And right now, we have the privilege to watch and co-create one of the most groundbreaking technologies of our lifetime:
intelligence on demand.
Think about how insane that is.
So I look at this and I think: is that not a big enough solution lever to tackle big problems head on?
And my answer is: hell yes.
Helmit
And this is why I started Helmit.
At Helmit, we’re using exactly this leverage to tackle digital violence affecting children: predators contacting minors, grooming dynamics, sextortion attempts and cyberbullying happening inside everyday chats.
We use on-device AI to detect early warning signals in chat conversations on platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Discord and others, so risks are spotted early, before they escalate.
The goal is simple: earlier detection, clearer intervention, safer digital childhoods.
If you’re interested in collaborating, on this societal challenge or others, I have a long list of ideas I want to build. Reach out.
Internal resignation is easy. Building is hard. Choose hard.
